Building an Email List as a Musician

Your email list is the one audience you truly own. Here's how to build it from zero.

Why Email Beats Social Media

Social media platforms control your reach. Algorithm changes can cut your visibility overnight. But your email list is yours — no algorithm, no pay-to-play, direct access to your fans.

The Numbers

  • Email open rates: 20-30% (vs. social media organic reach: 2-5%)
  • Email click rates: 3-5% (vs. social media: 0.5-1%)
  • Email conversion rates: 2-5x higher than social media for merch/ticket sales

How to Start

1. Choose a platform

  • Mailchimp: Free up to 500 contacts
  • MailerLite: Free up to 1,000 contacts
  • Beehiiv: Free up to 2,500 contacts
  • ConvertKit: $9/month (purpose-built for creators)

2. Create a signup incentive

Don't just say "subscribe to my newsletter." Give them a reason:

  • Exclusive unreleased song or demo
  • Early access to new music
  • Behind-the-scenes content
  • Free download of your best song

3. Collection points

  • Link in bio on all social platforms
  • QR code at merch table
  • Website popup (non-annoying)
  • After every release: "Want to hear the next one first?"

What to Send

  • New music announcements (your most important use)
  • Show dates and tour announcements
  • Personal stories (fans want to know you)
  • Exclusive content (demos, behind-the-scenes, early access)

How Often

Monthly minimum. Bi-weekly is ideal. Weekly is great if you have enough to say. Never more than weekly unless there's genuine news.

The Most Important Rule

Don't buy email lists. Ever. Every subscriber should have opted in voluntarily. A list of 200 real fans is worth more than 10,000 random emails.
