TikTok Strategy for Musicians

How to use TikTok to grow your audience without losing your mind on the content treadmill.

Why TikTok Matters

TikTok is the most powerful music discovery platform in the world right now. Songs go from unknown to millions of streams based on 15-second clips. But most musicians use it wrong.

The Mistake Most Artists Make

Most artists treat TikTok like Instagram โ€” polished, curated, promotional. TikTok rewards the opposite: raw, authentic, personality-driven content that doesn't feel like an ad for your music.

What Actually Works

1. The Hook is Everything

You have 1-2 seconds to stop someone from scrolling. Start with something unexpected, funny, or emotionally compelling. Never start with "Hey guys, I just released a new song..."

2. Show the Process

Behind-the-scenes content consistently outperforms polished content:

  • Recording vocals in the studio
  • Writing a song from scratch
  • Showing how a beat was made
  • Reacting to fan covers

3. Duets and Stitches

Engage with other creators' content. Duet popular sounds, stitch trending videos with your own take. This puts you in front of other creators' audiences.

4. The 15-Second Rule

Use 15-second clips of your best moments โ€” the chorus, the drop, the most emotional lyric. If people want more, they'll find your full song.

Posting Strategy

  • Frequency: 3-5 times per week minimum
  • Timing: Post when your audience is active (check analytics)
  • Batch create: Film 10 videos in one session, post throughout the week
  • Don't delete: Videos can go viral days, weeks, or months after posting

What NOT to Do

  • Don't buy followers or engagement
  • Don't only post when you're releasing music
  • Don't use "link in bio" as your only call to action
  • Don't chase every trend โ€” pick ones that fit your artist identity
  • Don't get discouraged by low view counts early on
