Private Events and Corporate Gigs
How private parties and corporate bookings can supercharge your income.
The Private Event Market
Private events โ weddings, corporate galas, birthday parties, holiday celebrations โ are a goldmine. Clients pay far more than venues because they're paying for exclusivity and curated entertainment, not bar revenue. A wedding ceremony musician can earn $1,500โ$5,000 for 2 hours; a DJ or band for a 4-hour reception, $2,000โ$10,000+.
Typical Rates
Corporate events command premium pricing. A one-hour cocktail performance: $800โ$2,500. A 3-hour corporate party or awards show: $2,500โ$7,500. Weddings vary widely but ceremony musicians expect $500โ$2,000, and bands for receptions $3,000โ$12,000 depending on location, duration, and travel.
Negotiate based on complexity (sound engineer needed?), guest count, and travel distance. Always include a deposit (typically 50%) to secure the date.
Finding Clients
Platforms like GigSalad and The Bash connect performers with event planners. Wedding websites (WeddingWire, The Knot) list musicians. Develop relationships with local event planners, venues, and caterers โ they refer work constantly. A strong portfolio and reviews generate repeat bookings.
Contracts and Deposits
Always use a written agreement. Specify date, time, duration, setup time, cancellation policy, deposit amount, and final payment due date. Include technical requirements (power outlet, WiFi, load-in time). A 50โ75% non-refundable deposit protects you; final payment is due the day of the event. Protect yourself against last-minute cancellations.
